Jester [ Barrel Medic ]

01-09-2005
Jester (Medicago truncatula) is an aphid resistant Barrel Medic and is a superior replacement for Jemalong Barrel Medic. Jester has much improved aphid resistance to Blue-Green Aphid and Spotted Alfalfa Aphid. Jester will provide increased herbage production and pest resistance for low to medium rainfall areas with alkaline soils. It will provide an effective disease break, while providing high quality feed for either hay or grazing purposes and is able to fix nitrogen, which is valuable for subsequent crop rotations. Barrel Medics are better suited to permanent pastures than Snail Medics and have a very high level of hard seed. This ensures good persistence even through cropping phases of a rotation.

Toreador [ Hybrid Disc X Strand Medic ]

01-09-2005
Toreador is an early maturing aphid resistant Hybrid Disc x Strand Medic (Medicago littoralis x Medicago tornata) and is a superior replacement for such varieties as Tornafield and Harbinger. Toreador demonstrates good resistance to Blue-Green Aphid and Spotted Alfalfa Aphid. Its early maturity makes it well suited to low rainfall environments and it can provide valuable high quality feed for such regions. Toreador has 15-30% soft seed, which enables it to regenerate well during the following year after seed set or after a cropping rotation. Increased aphid resistance will improve productivity and persistence compared to that of most other medics of similar maturity. Toreador is adapted to a wide range of soils and will provide a high level of soil nitrogen and effective disease break.

Paraggio [ Barrel Medic ]

05-10-2005
Paraggio (Medicago truncatula) was selected as a replacement for Jemalong and performs well on a range of neutral to alkaline soil types. Paraggio has a larger seed compared to Jemalong, which helps provide good seedling establishment and demonstrates a semi-erect growth habit. It has slightly lower levels of hard seed compared to other traditional Barrel Medics. This will assist in better regeneration in the year following seed set and makes Paraggio more suited to medium term paddock rotations. Paraggio has now been superseded by several cultivars with improved insect resistances and superior herbage production, however, all of these cultivars have higher hard seed levels. Paraggio will provide increased herbage production and pest resistance for low to medium rainfall areas with alkaline soils. It will provide an effective disease break, while providing high quality feed for either hay or grazing purposes and is able to fix nitrogen, which is valuable for subsequent crops in the rotation. Barrel Medics are better suited to permanent pastures than Snail Medics and have a high level of hard seed. This ensures good persistence even through cropping phases of a rotation.

Sephi [ Barrel Medic ]

05-10-2005
Sephi (Medicago truncatula) was selected as a replacement for Jemalong and performs well on a range of neutral to alkaline soil types. Sephi was selected for improved seedling vigour and insect resistance. It is a very hard-seeded variety that demonstrates similar regeneration compared to Jemalong. Sephi is a valuable variety that can provide increased herbage production and pest resistance for low to medium rainfall areas with alkaline soils. It provides an effective disease break, high-quality feed for either hay or grazing purposes, and is able to fix nitrogen which is valuable for subsequent crops in the rotation. Barrel Medics are better suited to permanent pastures than Snail Medics and have a very high level of hard seed. This ensures good persistence even through cropping phases of a rotation.
